How to move a Linux MS Virtual Server VM to a VMWare VM Prerequisites: - 1 Linux ( e.g. CentOS ) – the system, which will be moved
- 1 Virtual Server Host or Virtual PC – the Host System
- 1 MS Virtual Machine Windows 2000, 2003 or XP – for helping function
- 1 VMWare Host – the NEW Host System
- 1 VMWare VM Windows 2000, 2003 or XP – for helping function
- Add another virtual hard disk to virtual server
- Add the new disk to the system you like to move
- Insert an Acronis bootable image in to your virtual cdrom
- Boot with Acronis
- Add the new disk to your system
- Choose backup and select the complete hard disk (all partitions)
- Choose the before added disk as destination
- Wait for finishing action , it needs much time depending on your virtual hard disk size
- Go to your Virtual Server management site and remove the second disk from your Linux system
- Add the disk to any other ms OS like windows xp or windows server 2003
- Boot the system and copy the backup file(s) to your VMWare Host
- Go to the VMWare management console , choose the right OS Support for your moving system
- Select the properties tab and add a second hard disk (choose the same disk system as your old virtual server has e.g. old = IDE so new must be the same don’t change to SCSI if it not was before)
- Insert the Acronis bootable image in to your VMWare virtual cdrom.
- Start your system booting from cdrom, choose add disks
- Add both disks with fat32
- After finishing adding disk, stop the machine
- Go to the VMWare management console and add the new generated disk as a second disk to your MS VM, boot the system
- Copy the Acronis backup files to the second hard disk, shutdown the system and remove the disk from the windows VM
- Boot the new generated Linux VM with the formerly inserted Acronis image
- Select restore, choose the Acronis backup you’ve made, select the target disk, say yes to destroy all old partitions and restore the complete disk.
- Boot the new system, check if it is ok
- After finishing the restore process don’t forget to install VMWare Tools and if necessary, remove MS Virtual Server support tools
