How to move a Linux MS Virtual Server VM to a VMWare VM

 Prerequisites: 
  1. 1 Linux ( e.g. CentOS ) – the system, which will be moved
 
  1. 1 Virtual Server Host or Virtual PC – the Host System
  2. 1 MS Virtual Machine Windows 2000, 2003 or XP – for helping function
 
  1. 1 VMWare Host – the NEW Host System
  2. 1 VMWare VM Windows 2000, 2003 or XP – for helping function
  • Add another virtual hard disk to virtual server
  • Add the new disk to the system you like to move
  • Insert an Acronis bootable image in to your virtual cdrom
  • Boot with Acronis
  • Add the new disk to your system
  • Choose backup and select the complete hard disk (all partitions)
  • Choose the before added disk as destination
  • Wait for finishing action , it needs much time depending on your virtual hard disk size
  • Go to your Virtual Server management site and remove the second disk from your Linux system
  • Add the disk to any other ms OS like windows xp or windows server 2003
  • Boot the system and copy the backup file(s) to your VMWare Host
  • Go to the VMWare management console , choose the right OS Support for your moving system
  • Select the properties tab and add a second hard disk (choose the same disk system as your old virtual server has e.g. old = IDE so new must be the same don’t change to SCSI if it not was before)
  • Insert the Acronis bootable image in to your VMWare virtual cdrom.
  • Start your system booting from cdrom, choose add disks
  • Add both disks with fat32
  • After finishing adding disk, stop the machine
  • Go to the VMWare management console and add the new generated disk as a second disk to your MS VM, boot the system
  • Copy the Acronis backup files to the second hard disk, shutdown the system and remove the disk from the windows VM
  • Boot the new generated Linux VM with the formerly inserted Acronis image
  • Select restore, choose the Acronis backup you’ve made, select the target disk, say yes to destroy all old partitions and restore the complete disk.
  • Boot the new system, check if it is ok
  • After finishing the restore process don’t forget to install VMWare Tools and if necessary, remove MS Virtual Server support tools
